Things that left me Shook Week 14
Better late than never, as my momma always said. So to begin this wild adventure of a blog post, lets bippity boppity back our way up to week 14 that was all about Mental Health and Climate change. I’m glad we did end up talking about this topic, because mental health is a very serious issue in the United States that we don’t really discuss all that often, and because the subject matter is so heavy in this class it is nice to talk about our feelings for once. This weeks readings made me feel a lot of things and reminded me about something I have issues with myself. My family always taught me that family business stays in the family, so when I was growing up I never realized that talking to people about you feelings is an ok thing to do. It was not until my fifth mental breakdown about my financial situation first semester freshman year that I finally understood the benefit of talking to someone. Granted, that someone was a robotic voice at Audubon Park, but at least it taught me that valuable lesson.
I really enjoyed the article that had all of the exercises to get people in a better state, and I wish that I had found access to it sooner. I also thought that the reading that talked about the different kinds of trauma and PTSD before, after, and during man made disasters was interesting because I didn’t realize vicarious trauma was a thing until the reading pointed it out to me. I’ve known that it was a thing, but I never had a name to put to it. The article that talked about the love ethic and ethic of joy was interesting because of the discussion we had in class. I know personally that there is a difference between being sunny and being optimistic, my family is actually the perfect case study for that whole phenomenon.
Key Words
1) Optimism~ active believe that life can get better
2) Sunny~ customer service persona, is all an act
3) Vicarious Trauma~ experiencing second hand trauma when learning about certain topics like climate change.
