Things That Left Me Shook Week 13
Get out your favorite pair of Rocky Horror fishnets because this week was all about Science Fiction! From the starting points of the apocalypse (hello Neo-Malthusianism!) to a video of a woman sacrificing her body to grow a tree, this week has it all. We even covered a couple of nice tunes, and everyone’s favorite writer Octavia Spencer and fictional land Wakanda. I loved Spencer’s excerpt of Parable of The Sower, call me an Alabamaina but I always find books that use religious symbolism and themes are extremely interesting reads (Im a sucker for the JC imagery #rolltide). We also discussed how Snowpiercer was actually a commentary on geo-engineering (je suis shook), the potential of Afrofuturism. I am going to be honest, the climate change music was a hit or miss scenario with each song. There were some songs by hip hop Caucasus that Ienjoyed, but there were also some that I thought did a poor execution.
The readings reminded me why I like science fiction, and made me think about all the hours my family and I would watch countless hours of movies and tv shows. The Twilight Zone was always a favorite with my mom and me, and I’m actually super happy to see what Jordan Peele brings to it with the rebootbecause that man is a genius storyteller, and is great at using his work as commentary on issues.
Key Terms:
1) The Great Deluge: The great natural disaster that is going to finally yeet us off of the planet
2) Geo-engineering: deliberate large-scale, intervention in the climate system designed to counter global warming or offset some of its effects
3) Green gentrification: green space creation, restoration, and beautification projects attract wealthy white folk which causes housing prices to rise and the displacement of long term low income residents and POC folk.
