Week 16-Love, Memory, Healing

We finished this semester off on a more positive note: the importance of love in political spaces. Bell Hooks, in this week's reading "Love as the Practice of Freedom", believes that without love, healing is not entirely possible. Hooks believes that acts of love such as service for others, being compassionate, and allowing space for emotions are essential to the success of the healing process.

Also, Bell Hooks emphasizes the importance of intersectionality, that is, the understanding that struggles affect different groups of people differently. She warns against blind spots, which is the result of understanding one type of injustice but not another, i.e. someone understanding why gender affects someone, but not race. The phenomenon of blind spots leaves space for racism, sexism, etc.

This week's reading was rather pleasant. In a world so full of hate and conflict, choosing love is an act of resistance. It was nice to be reminded of the power of love, even in political spaces.
